  2. I knew very little about James. A. Garfield, before our visit to his home. He was president only for a few months before being assasinated by a deranged government job-seeker, and so is probably one of our more obscure presidents. After touring his home, I was suddenly struck by Garfield's intellect and competence -- he had been a farmer, a carpenter, a sailor, an educator, a preacher, a legislator, and a soldier, as well as a president -- and he seemed to excel at everything he did. And even into the presidency, he upheld a high moral standard, rising above sectarian and political differences. Makes me wonder how the course of our country would have been different, had he been able to serve his full 4 year term.
