The Great Circle

Great Circle Mound, Newark Earthworks, Newark, Ohio

The Hopewell Culture (100 B.C. - A.D. 500) built large mounds, this one in a large circular pattern, that served as a combination burial place, ceremonial site, and lunar astronomical observatory. These prehistoric earthworks in Central Ohio are the largest geometric earthworks on Earth.

  1. Truly one of the ancient wonders. Hard to believe there is something like that in Newark, Ohio. Also hard to believe that we play golf on top of the Octagon Mound.
