I believe the boat was a large sportsman's fishing boat. If you click on the image, a larger version opens, and then if you mouseover that image, an icon appears in the lower right that lets you enlarge it again. (That may only work for Windows Internet Explorer -- not sure.) I think I can see some fishermen in the boat. Lake Michigan is about 60 miles wide at that point, and I think the larger shipping vessels might have stayed further out. Visibility was only about 11 miles I heard.

Judith - yes horizons are of critical importance, particularly where water is involved.
What is the size of the ship on the horizon?
